Description

For anyone learning about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for the first time, this course gives you an introduction to the basics. Learn about different types of AAC and gain a greater understanding of who might use AAC and why. This course also includes an introduction to supporting AAC by providing strong foundations and using simple strategies for supporting AAC development.


This course is designed for beginners and anyone learning about AAC. This includes professionals new to the field such as Speech and Language professionals, Educators and Occupational Therapists. This course would also be suitable for families and those supporting an individual on their AAC journey.

1. What is AAC?

2. Different Types of AAC

3. Who uses AAC?

4. Supporting AAC

Learner outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Define 3 key terms used in relation to AAC

• Identify 3 different types of AAC

• List 3 strategies for supporting AAC development


Completion requirements: You must complete all course content including reading all text and watching all video content. This course is assessed via a multiple-choice, five-question knowledge check at the end of the course. The pass score is 80%. You can take the knowledge check multiple times.

This course provides an opportunity to earn 0.05 ASHA CEUs

If you wish to receive ASHA CEUs for this course, please make sure that the details in your Smartbox Academy profile are up to date and include your 8-digit ASHA number. We update the ASHA registry monthly so please allow 60 days for CEUs to show in your ASHA CE registry. This course is not available for partial credits.
